A FILM BY AUSTIN NUNES

BRIEF SYNOPSIS

Into The Bloo is a music documentary short film that captures drag musician; Lagoona Bloo (David Brumfield) as they prepare for a show and tell us their story of loss and triumph in the intimate confines of their dressing room.

The untimely deaths of both David’s parents become a precursor for their onstage persona, and a liberation from a traumatic past.

A raw storytelling approach features poignant childhood footage that leaves no stone unturned, a tell-all, sugar free interview, and glossy live performance sequences.15 minutes doesn’t seem like enough.

DIRECTOR STATEMENT

Into The Bloo is a passion project between two friends who found an opportunity to tell a story together that was free from corporate branding, another doom scroll post, and whatever happens to be trending. I first was inspired to follow David’s life more closely when I learned that he had an opportunity to play his largest audience to date. I thought it would be appropriate to capture rehearsals, interviews, costume fittings, etc, and edit a ‘making of’ revolving around the show. However, upon sitting down for the makeup mirror interview that is the foundation of Into the Bloo, Lagoona (David) revealed to me how the untimely death of both their parents were so intricately connected to their path of self-discovery and contributed to the performer his audience was about to see. I knew I had in my hands a story that needed to be told. In the months that followed, David’s family unearthed over 50 hours of childhood footage that became cited sources of David’s traumatic past. The documentary itself has been a pillar of David’s healing, as it presents his story in an incredibly honest, revealing and moving moment in his life. The film is inspired by Madonna's "Truth or Dare", Kylie Minogue's "Infinite Disco" and Jennie Livingston’s "Paris is Burning".

THEIR OBSTACLES

We go on to unearth the deep-seated obstacles that David had to confront as a result of his emotionally scarring and traumatic upbringing. Struggling with body image, grappling with his sexuality, and navigating the complexities of his relationships with his parents, and himself. David's journey was marked by pain and resilience. The narrative takes a poignant turn as we learn about the tragic deaths of both of his parents, further shaping his path of self-discovery and healing.

THEIR RESOLVE

In the final stage of this story arc, we witness David's transformation as he finds peace and forgiveness for both of his parents. With their passing, David was finally able to embark on the path to become the person he was destined to be. Through Lagoona, he appeared on America’s Got Talent and The Voice.
